- abstract: Upon reading of the death of one of his childhood friends, late thirty-something Gordie Lachance remembers back to an incident when he was twelve involving that friend. His story - It's just before the Labor Day weekend 1959 in his hometown of Castle Rock, Oregon, just before he is about to enter junior high. He, an insecure young man, feels more invisible at home than usual as it's five months after the tragic death of his older brother Denny, the favored son, who he loved and misses as much as anyone. His parents, who just don't understand Gordie's love of storytelling and writing as opposed to Denny's athletic pursuits, still have not gotten over their grief. Gordie spends much time with his three closest same aged friends, who attend school together. Vern Tessio is the slightly dim overweight one, that dimness largely out of naivety. Teddy Duchamp is the crazy one, whose father is also crazy, and he once held Teddy's ear to a stove and nearly burned it off. And Chris Chambers, Gordie's best friend, has in the public mindset a predetermined future as a lowlife, being just the latest lowlife in the Chambers family. Regardless, Chris acts more as a responsible father figure to Gordie in many ways than Gordie's own father. Vern learns from secretly overhearing his older delinquent brother Billy's conversation that he has discovered a dead body in the woods about twenty or thirty miles away, but does not want to do anything about it or tell anyone, especially in authority. With Vern telling his three friends, the four believe it is probably Ray Brower, a boy around their age from another town who went missing three days ago while going blueberry picking. Needing to walk there, they decide to go retrieve the body and thus become heroes in the process. They devise a plan of attack that will give them about twenty-four hours before their respective families may even realize that they are gone. What the four don't realize is that Billy does eventually tell his group of friends, led by the sadistic Ace Merrill, who has a win at any cost mentality, and as such it becomes a race to retrieve the body. But in their physical journey, the four boys also go through an emotional journey about their lives, their friendship and for Gordie why he has what becomes an obsession to see that dead body

As the summer of 1959 was coming to a close, Gordie, played by Wil Wheaton, and his three buddies, come to a juncture in their young lives – that of crossing over the threshold of childhood naiveté into that of adolescents and coming of age. Stand by Me is a story of lost innocence and growing up.
The opening scene is effectively narrated by Richard Dreyfuss. The narration is a prelude to the crux of the movie – a flashback to the summer of '59; a simpler times when kids were kids and void of accountability. Use of flashbacks in this movie is a poignant approach that links the beginning to the end.
The friends, bound by tumultuous pasts, set out on a two day expedition to find the body of Ray Brower, a kid whose life was cut short by a passing train. The town thugs also want to recover the body of Ray Brower. Ironically, the thugs and younger group of boys are no strangers to each other; in fact, the two sets of brothers harbor hostility toward one another.
Throughout the two day journey, Gordie along with Chris Chamber played by River Phoenix, Jerry O'Connell as Vern, and Corey Feldman as Teddy Duchamp, trudge between boyhood and young men. One minute the boys are dragging on cigarettes and the next minute they are pondering over the notion if the Disney character Goofy is a dog. The foursome share their inner most thoughts to their childish antics. Vern announces that cherry Pez would be his choice of "food" if he were only allowed to choose one food to survive on. As the story unfolds, it is the fateful meeting of the two gangs at the side of the tracks that puts friendship, brotherhood, and maturity to the test.
The thematic similarity in Stand by Me and that of the 1995 movie Now and Then resonates the familiar subject of coming of age. Within one short summer the lives of these kids changed forever, resulting in personal growth, and the realization that the events of the summer would change their lives forever.
The movie Stand by Me is a convincing representation of transitioning from a child to a young adult. Stand by Me has stood the test of time. Viewers can identify with the film and reminisce about their own loss of innocence and the changes in life that are inevitable.
